Hibiscus Simple Syrup
Refreshing, Tart, and Juicy. Perfect for Spring and Summer Cocktails!
Batch: 1qt
Cook Time: 2 Hours
Complexity: Moderately Simple
Hibiscus is wonderfully refreshing and underutilized. A great addition to a wide array of summer and spring cocktails! I have even heard tales of Hibiscus Syrup being added to create an interesting lemonade for a non alcoholic refreshment for both kids and adults alike!
Do be aware that Hibiscus is in itself a bit tart for a simple syrup, so some adjusting on lemon or lime may be necessary if you are using it in your own recipes.
Where to Buy Hibiscus
From my experience, hibiscus is quite cheap. Most Latin stores sell it in bulk. Walmart Grocery and a few diverse grocery stores carry it. If you cant find it there or if you don't have access to unique food stores, just order it online Amazon
What you will need
- Medium sauce pan and whisk
- 4 cups water
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cup dried hibiscus flowers
Lets get down to Cooking it..
- Combine all ingredients into medium saucepan, set stove to high
- Slowly stir ingredients until both sugar is dissolved and you see your first boiling bubbles *It is crucial to continue to stir until sugar is dissolved or you will just burn the sugar to the bottom of the pan
- As soon as your first bubbles surface, cut the heat to a low simmer while continuing to stir for 2 minutes as it cools to the lower temperature
- Set a timer for 2 hours and stir slowly every 20 minutes!
- Remove from heat and let cool at room temperature, this will allow the flavors to steep which will make for a much more flavorful syrup.
- Strain cooled syrup and enjoy! (feel free to eat the flowers, they are quite tasty)
The color of the simple will be near the natural color of the dried flower, a rich beautiful red syrup.
